‘I don't answer to the mayor,’ says Bill Blair as Rob Ford scandal deepens with police raids
At a heated press conference called to discuss the major guns and drugs raid Thursday, reporters grilled Chief Bill Blair on the existence of a video that appears to show the mayor smoking crack cocaine.
Blair could have denied it was real. Instead, when asked if wiretaps or any other surveillance turned up evidence of the video, the chief said he could not talk about it. […]
Asked bluntly by a Toronto Sun reporter Thursday: “If the mayor is not tied to any of this, wouldn’t it be prudent for you, or wouldn’t it make sense for you, to just say flat the mayor is not involved?”
Blair responded: “My responsibility is to collect the evidence and not to make pronouncements on what the evidence means, but to turn the evidence over to the court of law, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Blair explained he could not reveal intimate details of the investigation because his first priority is protecting the case.
“It’s a prosecution that’s important because it’s also going to help us to keep that community safer,” Blair said. “Holding those people accountable for the crimes that we allege that they’ve committed … has to be our first priority and I’m not going to jeopardize that.”
